High-resolution stratigraphy of the Middle Triassic (S Hungary): Key to correlation of Alpine and Germanic third-order depositional sequences

Sedimentology and palynofacies of Middle Triassic carbonate series are investigated in outcrop sections from the Mecsek and Villány Mountains in southern Hungary, representing palaeogeographic key sections for correlating depositional sequences of the alpine and germanic realm. Based on the well-established lithostratigraphic framework, the stratigraphic and spatial distribution patterns of sedimentary organic matter are analysed with respect to relative sea-level changes. The integrated study of sedimentary and organic facies enables a detailed reconstruction of the sedimentary system and finally contributes to establish a high-resolution cyclo- and sequence stratigraphic framework for the Middle Triassic of southern Hungary.
